What I Learned From Being a Bonus Mom/Daddy’s Girlfriend

I’ve been wanting to write this for awhile… ..but over the last six-plus months this topic has been sitting in my drafts section, my life and role in L’s life have changed. So instead of talking about it in the first person, I can now write about it with reflection, since I was abruptly removed from this role. In a previous post, I said goodbye to L. I didn’t know that last time I saw L would actually be the last time I saw her. But it was. I do hope I see her in the future, but I don’t think it will happen. I have accepted it. I am where…

Musings: Cannabis + The Red Tent

What in the WORLD could these two things have in common? Well, they are the themes of two events I attended last week. During my process through self-exploration and growth, I have wanted to challenge myself. Challenge my perceptions, beliefs, and perceived thoughts. It has been a challenge all right! But worth it… Cannabis as I now call it, no longer weed or marijuana, has always had a stigma with it in my mind, thoughts, and perceptions. I’ve never hidden this, but I’ve always somewhat accepted and supported friends who use this plant — recreationally or medicinally. However, I did and do have my opinions about it. As its prevalence grows, in…

    City Girl Does Más Cancún

Too much goodness means más is required… We didn’t have too many more days left of our trip after the wedding, but we enjoyed every last second of our vacation. MONDAY Remember when I said we had $750 in resort credit to burn through? Well, when Lil and I saw that swimming with dolphins was an option, we knew we’d check that off our bucket list. I will say, we both have an empathetic heart for these animals that are raised in captivity for our enjoyment, but we still continued to book this excursion. There were a couple other options we both wanted to try, but with our schedule and the…

Race Recap: San Jose 5mi 2018, Virtual Runner

Virtual recaps are the best… Slight sarcasm intended. They are quick because there isn’t much to talk about. I paid to run at my leisure. For some reason, I find myself needing to recap my virtual runs. Maybe because its something new or maybe because I spent money to run on my own time, in my own city, with no race fun. But here I am, telling you about the time I acted like a true virtual runner, unlike when I virtually ran the Scottsdale 5k. I love the voice the Giant Race team has cultivated. They are sassy and fun, not stuffy and uptight like you’d expect a professional sports league to…

    City Girl Does Cancún

It all started with a letter… …and continues with a beautiful and very memorable wedding on the beach of Cancún. Not, not my love story. HAHA! But the dreamiest of stories of the Wench meeting, falling in love and marrying Hotlanta in a whirlwind long-ish weekend in Mexico surrounded by love, family, and friends. I absolutely love the idea of a destination wedding. I love even more when friends decide that is how their wedding will go down. #LivinLaVidaThornton! We’ve been anticipating this trip for over a year and the calendar date finally met reality. There was definitely a little somewhat last minute rearranging I had to do since my plus…

    Musings: Dear Dad…

An intangible gift for my beloved Poppa Bear. Dear Dad, It’s your 35th Father’s Day! Not for any particular reason should this one be extra special, but I decided to do something different this year. Instead, I wanted to come here and share with the world (who reads my blog) my love, my appreciation, my fears, and my admiration for you. My Poppa Bear. My Dad. My Daddy. My Rock. My Protector. My Coach. My Everything. Mom, don’t get sad, you are plenty of these things and more too! I have never had to wonder what it would be like to not have you around. For that, I am eternally…

Musings: Stop Calling it the Break Up Diet

I’ve always joked about it….we all joke about it… But I need to stop. I think everyone should stop. It happened with my first break up in 2005. I lost some weight, cried some, and did not know how to handle my sadness of ending a six-year relationship with my first, young love. I chose to use partying to hide anything I was feeling, but I could because I was 300+ miles away from the culprit and most of my support system too. I was too young and probably immature to realize there might have been a mental health issue attached to the breakup. As cliche as it is, I…

    Race Recap(ish): The Big Run #GlobalRunningDay, 5k

I always appreciate this day, regardless of how running is going in my life. I could have sworn it was called #NationalRunningDay, but I guess not. I looked back to last years post and it was Global Running Day too. 2016 also had the same new name. Old habits die hard, I guess. Buuuut, 2014 was actually called #NationalRunningDay! And so was 2015, I finally found a blurb about it in an old post! I always remember this day in 2014, because I’m pretty sure its the first time I actually celebrated this day. I also remember this day, because Juan and I had run to Sac State for their free fun…

Race Recap: Women’s Fitness Festival, 10k

I didn’t realize it’s been F O U R years since I’ve run this race. I literally thought I ran it two years ago. But, NO! I think I remember why. I actually love the reason this race exists. Women ONLY race in my favorite city, Sacramento. That’s pretty rad. Empowering. All of the good that running does for our community and for women all rolled into one event for our city. That being said. A few things I remember why I don’t generally run this race anymore. In fact, that last time I ran this race they offered the half marathon distance, back in 2014. One reason is this…
